Murlo Interview and Guest Mix

murlo djing

London based badman Murlo has been a favourite on the show for some time. With a  constant output of nothing but quality originals, remixes and edits popping up all over the most hyped blogs on the internet it only seemed right to hit up Murlo for an interview and a mix. Thankfully for us and you he was down.

Ok so for anyone out there unaware of the man called Murlo, can you give us a short breakdown of what you do?
Hi, I’m Murlo. I’m a DJ / producer Based in the UK, London.

Your now based in London after originally growing up in the Midlands of England and then spending time in Brighton. How have you found the shift from being outside the bubble? and has being amongst everything in London had a positive effect on your own music and motivation to get busy?
I was DJing and occasionally making music when I was down in Brighton but the transition to London really kicked me up the arse in terms of making more music. I love it here, obviously London has an amazing legacy of music so to have that as well as an active group of producers and promoters making things happen it makes it a great place to live.

Your sound is a super refreshing approach to Dancehall, Soca and Bashment with healthy doses of uk bass vibes. What were your first introductions to Uk Bass and Caribbean music?
When I lived in Brighton I started djing at parties; playing grime, garage and uk funky. The more I got into it the more I looked back at the early roots of the genres and that’s when I started getting into dancehall, soca and SA house.

What draws you to making these kind of tunes?
I’m a big fan of melody, and the energy as well.

London is a huge city and forever been the Centre of forward thinking club music, Do you see any overlap between scenes? For example can you go out and hear Dancehall and in the same place hear Grime or Uk Garage? Or are the scenes all pretty segregated?
Yeah I mean the dances I go to usually have a range of genres in the night. I’d say the London sound encapsulates all the genres you mentioned so its kinda standard you’d hear garage with grime and dancehall with funky. You get some nights that focus on a specific genres like hip-hop but I mean even those nights I’d hear a bashment tune or two.

You recently had a remix on a release from one of our Melbourne Homies Mat Cant’s “Make Believe” ep, which was a killer remix by the way! Are you working with any other Australian producers? please tell us there are some plans to come out to Australia in the pipeline?
ah no, nothing more yet, would love to visit Australia though, never been!

In your spare time if you have any, what sort of tunes do you listen to? Any guilty pleasures?
Haha well I listen to alot of r’n'b. That aint a a guilty pleasure though, just pleasure.

Who do you consider producers to lookout for in 2013?
So many! Samename and Major Grave are producing some of my favourite grime at the moment. Also some big releases to come from Famous Eno and swing ting this year.

What’s the plans for the year ahead? Anything we should be looking out for from your end release wise?
Yeah im sitting on quite a lot of stuff at the moment, hopefully I’ll see it released this summer on various labels. Other than that im just gonna keep making tunes.

Lastly Tell us about the Mix you have sent through for us?
It’s a live 2 hour mix of whole heap of sounds that i cover, best have a listen and take it all in.

Thanks and large up for taking the time to have a chat and sending us this mix.

A Tribute To Jay Dee…

JAY DEE ARTWORK

Winding through to the end of Dilla Month i only thought it would be appropriate to blog this mix i put up about two weeks back.

This is the first in a three part series of mixes I will be doing to say thanks to easily one of the most talented and forward thinking minds period. Jay Dee single handily changed the way I and I’m sure countless others listen to hip hop and music in general. I was a late appreciator of this man’s genius and after giving myself the time to properly digest alot of Dilla’s music in in my own time on my own terms it was mind blowing realising all the amazing joints he cut solo as well as for some of my favourite groups, it only seemed right to go ahead with this mix. In all honesty I said to myself I would stay away from ever doing a Dilla tape because it has been done so well by so many amazing dj’s and producers but something else told me if this tape gets one more person hyped to delve a Little deeper into his immense back catalogue then it’s all worth it. This mix is basically a bunch of some my first introductions to tracks from Dilla, some classics, some b sides, instrumentals and some remix’s that bump more than the og’s, again it is only a scratch on the surface of this man’s body of work, stay tuned for parts 2 and 3. Please enjoy, pass along and share with friends, fam and appreciators.

All Sydney peeps the Official Genius Of J Dilla Tribute night goes down on the 2nd of March, with a live band and some of Sydney’s finest on the Turntables all paying Tribute to the late great Jay Dee. All proceeds going direct to Ma Dukes. http://www.facebook.com/events/236211166514705/?fref=ts

Growing Pains with Preacha

This week in Growing pains we get inside the head of Sydney badman Preacha. Preacha is also a good homie and i feel very lucky that he broke down some of the jams that helped to sculpt his varied musical leanings. For anyone that isn’t clued in to Preacha, he is one of Sydney’s upfront tastemakers, responsible for holding down  presenter duties on FBi Radio’s “Low Motion” with partner in crime Max Gosford. Preacha has also  played and regulated a bunch of the most significant bass parties across Sydney, as well as supporting all of your favourite internationals. For now let’s delve into some of the tunes that got him hooked.

Download: Kraftwerk – Pocket Calculator

This is one of my earliest musical memories that doesn’t involve Iron Maiden or Bon Jovi. My mum used to tape all the Godzilla movies for me when they aired on SBS and at the end of one of the movies (I think it was Godzilla Vs. Biollante) there was a whole bunch of weird music videos. This was one of them. I remember bugging out like “Who would make a song about a calculator?” but I couldn’t get the words out of my head. Plus I had one of those Speak & Spell joints that made the same kinda sounds. Still listen to this album all the time.

MP3: Eric B. & Rakim – Don’t Sweat The Technique

I first discovered this gem on the NBA Jam Session VHS tape around 93. This was the illest out of all the NBA tapes that were out back then because not only did you get all the highlights from the gods of that era but they were cut up with videos by Bell Biv DeVoe & Wreckx-N-Effect! That funky-ass baseline and Rakim’s delivery made this track stand out for me though. My brother Blake & I used to setup the Michael Jordan Pro in the lounge room, pop this tape in and get our Spud Webb on.

Download: Aphex Twin – Windowlicker

Now it’s like 1999, me and Blake are up late Friday night watching RAGE as per usual. This video comes on with 2 dudes riding in a drop top trying to run game on some females. Plus they’re cursing up a storm so I’m thinking this is gonna be some of the hardest gangsta rap shit I’ve ever heard. Then some creepy looking dude jumps out of a limo busting out some MJ type moves and the girls faces change to his! And the beats are like nothing I’ve heard before. My brother changed the channel and we just looked at each other like “What the fuck was that?!?” We flipped it back and now the girls have turned into grotesque monsters and the music is just blowing my mind. I couldn’t get the images and sounds out of my head for the rest of the weekend and I haven’t been the same since.

WATCH THIS CLIP!!

MP3: Pharoahe Monch – Simon Says

I think it was the October 1999 issue of The Source magazine the came with a little extra booklet of the top 25 Hip Hop Quotables up to that point. Included was Pharoahe’s verse from the classic Organized Konfusion track ‘Stray Bullet’ and even though I had never heard the song I thought it was the illest rhyme ever. So when I saw he had a solo album coming out I copped it as soon as it dropped. As soon as I popped the CD in the deck I knew I had made the right purchase. Up until then I was still jamming shit like 2Pac & DMX real hard but the ‘Internal Affairs’ album opened me up to the whole underground independent hip hop movement that was going on at the time. From then on I probably spent more time at Next Level Records than I did at school, spending all my lunch money on records. The whole album is dope but he flipped the Godzilla theme on this joint which kinda takes us back to where this little piece started. It’s all cyclical.

>>> This is also a brand new mix done be Preacha for the upcoming Mega festival OutsideIn. The mix covers a host of the artists playing on the day. Preacha will be holding down peaktime duties on the day. I would advise anyone who hasn’t got tickets yet to get their shite together before there sold out and you’ll be crying with regret.
