It was a mid week winter festival madness at the FBi studios this Wednesday. Festival organiser Lord Ichiban packed the The Stolen Records studio with a line up that was off the hook. And admission was free!
Getting us warmed up for things to come, we started the show with a Mike Who? dancehall mini-set. Once warmed up, we let the Flatbush Zombies chew on our brains with talk of kangaroo beatdowns and all-around backstage antics that consisted of tea drinking, mini pear eating dares and an Atari.
Stalking in midway through was Norwegian DJ diety, Cashmere Cat purring his way through an rnb infused, jersey club trappy set.
And not to be forgotten is D-Rakkas of the South Rakkas Crew. He foreshadowed the great things that will be going down at this Saturday’s Dutty Dancing party at Goodgod Small Club.
Yep you heard it here, your favourite trio of Sydney outdoorsmen have left their golf clubs at home and instead taken to the water for the second instalment of “KNEE DEEP”, this time flanked by special guest, one half of Paper Plane Project, their Perth via Sydney compadre Mase Boogie. Expect nothing but the finest Boogie, Disco and Future funk vibes in Sydney’s best kept dimly lit den, Tatler. Cheap drinks, late night crawlers and as you all know rolling distance to burgers. PLUS the girl on the bike said she’s coming to hang out and shoot lazers from behind the booth, you don’t want to miss that!

The Player Haters Ball returns to the Goodgod Danceteria. This time to pay tribute to Dr Dre’s 2001 album. Joyride and his band of merry men gave these gangsta rap classics a pimped out soul reworking, while Levins, Shantan Wantan Ichiban and Joyride in DJ mode threw down jam after jam to keep the dancefloor heaving till the early hours of the morning.

London based badman Murlo has been a favourite on the show for some time. With a constant output of nothing but quality originals, remixes and edits popping up all over the most hyped blogs on the internet it only seemed right to hit up Murlo for an interview and a mix. Thankfully for us and you he was down.
Ok so for anyone out there unaware of the man called Murlo, can you give us a short breakdown of what you do?
Hi, I’m Murlo. I’m a DJ / producer Based in the UK, London.
Your now based in London after originally growing up in the Midlands of England and then spending time in Brighton. How have you found the shift from being outside the bubble? and has being amongst everything in London had a positive effect on your own music and motivation to get busy?
I was DJing and occasionally making music when I was down in Brighton but the transition to London really kicked me up the arse in terms of making more music. I love it here, obviously London has an amazing legacy of music so to have that as well as an active group of producers and promoters making things happen it makes it a great place to live.
Your sound is a super refreshing approach to Dancehall, Soca and Bashment with healthy doses of uk bass vibes. What were your first introductions to Uk Bass and Caribbean music?
When I lived in Brighton I started djing at parties; playing grime, garage and uk funky. The more I got into it the more I looked back at the early roots of the genres and that’s when I started getting into dancehall, soca and SA house.
What draws you to making these kind of tunes?
I’m a big fan of melody, and the energy as well.
London is a huge city and forever been the Centre of forward thinking club music, Do you see any overlap between scenes? For example can you go out and hear Dancehall and in the same place hear Grime or Uk Garage? Or are the scenes all pretty segregated?
Yeah I mean the dances I go to usually have a range of genres in the night. I’d say the London sound encapsulates all the genres you mentioned so its kinda standard you’d hear garage with grime and dancehall with funky. You get some nights that focus on a specific genres like hip-hop but I mean even those nights I’d hear a bashment tune or two.
You recently had a remix on a release from one of our Melbourne Homies Mat Cant’s “Make Believe” ep, which was a killer remix by the way! Are you working with any other Australian producers? please tell us there are some plans to come out to Australia in the pipeline?
ah no, nothing more yet, would love to visit Australia though, never been!
In your spare time if you have any, what sort of tunes do you listen to? Any guilty pleasures?
Haha well I listen to alot of r’n’b. That aint a a guilty pleasure though, just pleasure.
Who do you consider producers to lookout for in 2013?
So many! Samename and Major Grave are producing some of my favourite grime at the moment. Also some big releases to come from Famous Eno and swing ting this year.
What’s the plans for the year ahead? Anything we should be looking out for from your end release wise?
Yeah im sitting on quite a lot of stuff at the moment, hopefully I’ll see it released this summer on various labels. Other than that im just gonna keep making tunes.
Lastly Tell us about the Mix you have sent through for us?
It’s a live 2 hour mix of whole heap of sounds that i cover, best have a listen and take it all in.
