Episode #5234: Dancehall + Sr Bolivar Mix + the Havknot + Raving with Janine

A re-enactment of janine in her rave days

A re-enactment of janine in her rave days

LISTEN: Full show with Havknotz, Sr Bolivar, Dancehall and Rave Stories

I’mma keep this brief cuz my brain be all like:    d[o.O]b    after hearing Kendrick’s verse on ‘Control’.  Ok, sure we’re all thinking it, but dang Kenny, why did have to murder everyone on that track? WHY?! Oh and some advice Jay Electronica, maybe, just maybe you should have had a peep at Kendrick’s lyrics before you followed up with that weak-ass verse. Ya, just because I was brrapping and “oh my gawding” after Kendrick’s verse, doesn’t mean I didn’t pay attention to the soft follow up. Someone please just take me back to 1986 where the only ‘Control’ I was interested was by Janet Jackson and yes, it was nasty.

Hai, oh yeah, we played a whole bunch of other stuff in that 113 mins that Control (not the Janet version) was not on air. Sir Shant-a-Lot started off with an old-sounding-new school reggae set, then that Control track happened and I blanked out…

I’m just playing! Senor Bolivar kicked off some tropical beats that had us dancing and we ended off the show with Havknot Massive who dropped a Havknot exclusive.

Podcast #4521: Cakes Da Killa + The Tongue: Freestyles, Interviews, Trivia, Beef & Fun Times

Download Full Show: Cakes Da Killa & The Tongue in the Studio

Who the heck is Cakes Da Killa? I didn’t know either until this show. He’s a badass MC, poet, lyricist and madd theatre buff from New Jersey and clearly a long lost cousin of the Panini family. Blinked and I missed it but he was in Sydney a little while back. Well spoken and dope on the mic, I’m kinda gutted I didn’t see him live. Next time…

Next we had Sydney artist The Tongue aka Toungue aka Tonuge aka The Teacher. When he’s not influencing the young minds of the future, dressing in drag for video clips and starting Twitter beefs he’s writing thought-provoking tracks and doing one hell of a job performing them. Here to promote his ‘Surrender to Victory’ tour The Tongue stopped by to talk about rap music and freestyle. And since he’s such a fan of beefs, Shantan had him play our occasional Stolen Records game “Cake” but altered for this instance to “Steak”. Winning 4.5 pieces of luke-warm IGA beef steak The Tongue humoured our presenter and answered all the hip hop beef questions correctly.

Wanting even more beef, he then dissed us in his freestyle, thus starting a Stolen Records v Tongue beef*.

You should listen to the show.

(*There’s no beef, it was a weak ploy to increase readership. Sigh…)

Episode #4321: A$AP Ferg Interview + DJ Leon Smith Booty Shakin’ #twerk Mix

RADIO SHOW: Listen to show w/ A$AP FERG and DJ LEON SMITH

Howdy! And a happy Hump Day to you. So, Jay-Z drops an album – which nearly goes platinum instantly and tweets that his favourite Britney Spears track is ‘Toxic’ and Miley Cyrus is a Twerk GOD, what in the world is going on…? But on a breakfast tip, Jay-Z favourite cereal is Cap’n Crunch – mine too. See? Rappers are just like us!

A$AP mob member A$AP Ferg graced us with an interview. After 2-hours of waiting to record said interview, Shantan quickly realised that A$AP didn’t have the same meaning as ASAP. To me, that seemed quite obvious. I mean you never see anyone write soon like $oon. Apparently it means “Always Strive and Prosper” or maybe “All Strippers Ask for Paper”.

Someone say strippers? We had the Sultan of Smut, King of Ratchet, Baron of Booty Shake, DJ Leon Smith. DJ Leon Smith has been in the Sydney DJ scene for a hot minute and he’s a part of the Stolen Records extended family. But tonight he pulled back and only went quarter ratchet on us but still laid an expletive DJ set which was all we could ask for and more.

Episode #7383: Classic Hip Hop, Ellesquire, Tuka & NZs P-Money

p-money-960
RADIO SHOW: LISTEN TO SHOW WITH P MONEY, ELLESQUIRE & TUKA

Massive classic hip hop show tonight. On the tails of the New Frontiers supporter drive, we took it old school. Ready or Not whether you’re part of the Everyday Struggle or living the Street Life Mike Who? dropped some serious beats, so criminal it made you think about investing in a Getaway Car. But this is What We Do.

We also had the darlings of Aussie hip hop Tuka (Thundamentals) and Ellesquire (Loose Change) spit some rhymes. Despite their backstage diva antics (green tea + lemon requests) they were good sports on air and freestyled their way out of  an intergalactic theme.

Closing the show was a set from NZ hip hop Don P-Money. This chap is touring Sydney and Melbourne (with the ultra fine and um, talented David Dallas) promoting his album Gratitude.

Speaking of gratitude, FBi Radio is having a super rad out-of-this-world New Frontiers supporter drive. In addition to winning cool prizes, your donation helps keep great shows like this one on air. More information here: http://fbiradio.com/newfrontiers/

Episode #58832: Flatbush Zombies, Cashmere Cat & South Rakkas Crew: Interviews, DJ Set + Mash-Ups

flatbush-zombie-in-fbi
LISTEN: FLATBUSH ZOMBIES, CASHMERE CAT & D-RAKKAS

It was a mid week winter festival madness at the FBi studios this Wednesday. Festival organiser Lord Ichiban packed the The Stolen Records studio with a line up that was off the hook. And admission was free!

Getting us warmed up for things to come, we started the show with a Mike Who? dancehall mini-set. Once warmed up, we let the Flatbush Zombies chew on our brains with talk of kangaroo beatdowns and all-around backstage antics that consisted of tea drinking, mini pear eating dares and an Atari.

Stalking in midway through was Norwegian DJ diety, Cashmere Cat purring his way through an rnb infused, jersey club trappy set.

And not to be forgotten is D-Rakkas of the South Rakkas Crew. He foreshadowed the great things that will be going down at this Saturday’s Dutty Dancing party at Goodgod Small Club.

Before rapping and leading a Michael Jackson karaoke sesh in front of today’s youth at the Enmore, Mac Miller rolled through the FBi Studio for a quick chat and a cypher.

We also did a phoner with DJ Shortee Blitz. The KISS FM turntablist is kicking off his Australian tour and showed us a thing or two while providing a dope ass 30min set. That too, is also at the link below.

Warming up before any night out is key. Especially if you’re warming up for two of the hottest summer events showcasing a mix dancehall, latin heat and tropical bass – complete with plenty of ass-shaking, grinding, dizzy footwork and dutty wining. Gappy Ranks and Radio Maleme rolled through today and lawd, did they ever show us how to get a dancefloor moving.

Gracing the Australian shores from London, Gappy came at us 110% with a solid interview and a bashment live performance. Melbourne’s RU-CL came in strong with support and hey, during their performance my hips in the studio weren’t the only ones gyrating.

Radio Maleme representing part of the Pineapple Republic, finished the show with a spicy, caliente, tropcial latin heat. Rapid BPM’s, soulful singing and the perfect mix had people calling far and wide wondering who the heck is blowing up the airwaves and where did we get him from.  His name is Sr Bolivar and he is from Colombia, folks. That’s right COLOMBIA. Knowing his stuff, Sr Bolivar provided the perfect preview for next week’s Pineapple Republic – a night you will not want to miss.

Want to know more? Of course you do.

Growing Pains with LinoType

Growing pains continues to bubble along,  and this week i am hyped to introduce to the big homie LinoType. Lino is our West Coast Correspondent here at Stolen Records, you all may know Lino from his posts on the blog, that generally make a lot more sense than my own or Shantan’s babble. Lino also happens to be a genuine dude, known for his Pai mai knowledge of tunes, don like skills on the turntables and his uber baritone voice. Lino was a part time Sydney resident/ illegal immigrant and during this time he regulated a bunch of parties, came and hung out at Stolen Records and was my only ever guest at the Who Over.

Intro By LinoType…

Michael Who is a real bro, and for real bros, I won’t mind taking a little trip down memory lane. I’ve gone through many musical phases in life, from soft rock singer to west coast gangster to staunch underground elitist to southern rap fanatic. If anyone was wondering, my current playlist revolves around 2 Chainz and old Prince.

Download: Tag Team – Whoomp There It Is

This was the first cassingle I ever bought. Around that time, my sister started college in New York, and I remember our family helping her move out there. ‘Whoomp’ would get played all day on NYC radio, and I remember it being one of the first rap songs where I caught all of the lyrics. That infectious hook was undeniable, and I just had to own it, since it barely got played in LA at the time.

Download:2Pac – I Got My Mind Made Up

Middle school was all about fronting like you were either in a gang, or that you knew some gang members, or that you knew about gangs. 2Pac would get the most play, along with a lot of ‘Westsiiide’ posturing. It’s funny because the best song on the album was the joint with 2 rappers from NYC. Daz hooked up the beat that can best be described as nocturnal, Method Man compared himself to Magellan and Johnny Cash in one verse, and everyone else came extra correct. (For the record, I’m more of a Biggie guy)

MP3: Bob James – Nautilus

I had already been buying vinyl for a while by the time I got this, but this was the first record I picked up that made me want to have a legit record collection. Listening to this for the first time was like being exposed to the matrix. Shout outs to The Record Spot in Thousand Oaks. If the owner’s daughter is working, you’ll probably have an awkward time. All she does is talk to her boyfriend on the phone and complain about working. However if the owner is there, he’ll hook you up. He noticed me looking through the jazz section, and basically handed me the Bob James joint and recommended I check it out.
