Sample Snitching: The Icemen – My Girl (She’s A Fox)

Young Jimi Hendrix

Oh this is not The Icemen. It's a young Jimi with Wilson Pickett from 1966

This little 7″ single and possibly the group that made this track, may have been totally forgotten if not for the fact they employed a young James Marshall (a.k.a. Jimi Hendrix) to play guitar on this song. Between touring with Curtis Knight and the Squires, James was doing a bit of session work for King Curtis. Out of these sessions came songs for King Curtis himself, Lonnie Youngblood, Jimmy Normans and this one for The Icemen – a soul duo made up of James Stokes and Gino Armstrong.

This track was sampled on both Amy Winehouse and John Legend records in 2007. Coincidence? Maybe they picked up the same Jimi Hendrix – The Early Years compilation.

Good Vibrations Line Up 2011 – Nas & Damian Marley, Phoenix, Ludacris, Kelis, Erykah Badu, Cee-Lo, Rusko, Janelle Monae tour Australia

I know a few of my DJ friends like to hate on Good Vibrations for various reasons, but of the major festivals they have always had a good line up of acts for folks that enjoy their hip hop and soul roots in general.

Over the years, I have some nice memories of seeing a range of artists like Talib Kweli and Jean Grae, Estelle (before American Boy), Lee Scratch Perry & The Mad Professor, DJ Marky, Soul II Soul and Q-Tip. To bigger names like Kayne West, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes who just murdered it last year.

However, this line up is possibly the best ever. I for one am really looking forward to this. Hopefully we can hook up some interviews.

Line Up:
Faithless
Phoenix

Nas & Damian Marley
Cee Lo Green

I am putting up a couple of my shows from the otherside. Listen back to this one, it’s huge. We talk to Kool Keith about Dick Towels and other perverted bizarreness. DJ Bonez giving us an epic mix. Plus we do a grime cypher with Sky’High, Fame and Nine High’s Scotty Hinds and Fraksha. Though please note that we recorded the cypher with Nine High in a different studio in Melbourne. We didn’t pick up that there was a bit of a delay so Nine High are not on beat, not by any fault of their own.

Westside

Good to see a bit of a classic West Coast hip hop revival going on. I am rather sick of hip hop purists that still only listen to, play and try to recreate the sound of New York in the early 90s. It has been 20 year now dude, and it is getting a little tired. Give me a song about drive bys over a fat P-Funk bassline. Revisiting that sort of hip hop is way overdue.

The Grand Supreme Selector Imperial Mike Who? has put together a mix of Californian hoo-bangers as a little taster for his night “Way 2 Fonky”…

Official Video: Cee-Lo Green – Fuck You

I can imagine in 20 years time going to the Domain to be seeing Cee-Lo Green perform for Sydney Festival or Jazz In The Domain, or whatever they will call it then. I will be there with my rug, crackers and wine singing along to classic hits like this one. “I pity the foooooooooooool”.

Kano – Method to the Maadness

Kano on a scooter in Aiya Napa in 2003

They might seem mean and anti-social, but the grime kids just want to be liked. But it seems in their quest for popularity they end up making some rather questionable music. Anything by Tinchy Stryder these days and Dizzee’s ‘Dirtee Disco’ are just some examples. Though Kano’s aims might be quite similar, he just seems to do it a little more classy.

He has just released a new album, ‘Method to the Maadness’, and it has some big tunes with production from the likes of Boys Noize, Hot Chip, Chase & Status and Diplo. He tried the R&B thing a while ago, and now that he is working with some electro producers it’s just infinitely more credible than the embarrassing electro pop shit that everybody else is making.

Rollercoaster Rapping vs Rollercoaster Karaoke

I thought this was a really awesome find. A good low budget idea for a filmclip. You just sit there watching in anticipation to see if he can continue rapping when the rollercoaster drops. But then higher lord of the internet, Fashimi, trumped my rap video with rollercoaster karaoke

So if you are productiony inclined, you might like to remix this song by Evidence for a Rhymesayers remix competition. Download the accapella on iTunes and send your 320kbps MP3s to contest@rhymesayers.com and you could win prizes.

Cee-Lo Green – Fuck You

Today just got that much more awesome. Here is the new Cee-Lo Green tune to be released on his album Lady Killer. It just makes me wonder in anticipation what other sort of bombs he is holding on to for the album.
