Out of no where. Sold out shows across the country. No significant radio play. Only now they are starting to catch on. In this post record sales and post radio era, underground hip hop is just as popular as ever with a new generation.

Last night went off. Never have we scene the Enmore bounce like that with a crowd full of dedicated hip hop fans. Kendrick did a mix of both old and new material, which all went down amazingly and then ‘bam’ came out for a third encore. Massssiivvvveeee!

So good to see a young hip hop artist come out here, when they’re career is really popping, rather than wheeling out the same old geriatrics chasing 19 year old girls around the backstage.

Let us know what you think? Highlights? Who else do you want to see come out?

Kendrick Lamar | New Australian Tour Dates | The Jig Is Up | The Recipe (Black Hippy Remix)

When you were thinking all we get in Australia is has been 50 year old rappers. Kendrick Lamar gets announced. It is rare we get hip hop artists out here while their career is really popping. Maybe Australia is an after thought. Maybe it is too pricey and risky for promoters who find it hard to judge how popular they really are with no record sales and no national radio play. This one is definitely paying off though. Kendrick selling out his Sydney and Melbourne concert with in a number of hours and moving to a bigger venue. Here are the new dates.

Wednesday, 19th December
The HiFi, Brisbane

Thursday, 20th December
Enmore Theatre, Sydney

Friday, 21st December

I have memories of listening to Paparazzi on rotation on my walkman sharing a headphone with a mate, while we drank in the park. As a long time fan of Xzibit, it totally took me by suprise when he started working with Dre and Eminem and began to blow up on a more commercial level. Now better know for modifying cars than hip hop, Xzibit recently toured Australia hitting every two horse town on the map. Here are some photos from Sydney.

I had a bit of a love hate relationship with the band. Bombs Over Baghdad for instances – not necessary. I just want to hear that kicking, crisp electronic production rather than a wall of noise through which it was sometimes difficult to make out the song. However, on the other hand, Spottieottiedopalicious played with the help of two horn players in matching green Adidas tracksuits – stooooopid fresh to the power of infinity plus one.

Oh did anybody see that hoochie doing her stripper dance between the horn players? Oh dear! Maybe it would work in a place where folks weren’t so rhythmically challenged, but it just seems awkward when they invite the girls on stage in an attempt to turn the encore into the after party.

Nitpicking aside, Big Boi has hits for days, and delivers them with an amazing energy and flow. He played his part of all the Outkast hits as early as ‘Southernplayalisticcadiallacmusic’ taking us through to his more recent ‘Sir Luscious Left Foot’ solo jams. What more can I say? Dude can really rap, and it is just bumping party music.

In addition, Theophilus London was fun. Bringing a little bit of that Andre 3000 element to the tour.

Oh and big ups to Thundamentals who almost got kicked off the tour for stealing chicken backstage. Apparently Big Boi has two tonnes of chicken wings in his rider in every variety from Buffalo Wings to Honey Mustard Wings.

Anyways, here is a mix we did…

Good Vibrations Line Up 2011 – Nas & Damian Marley, Phoenix, Ludacris, Kelis, Erykah Badu, Cee-Lo, Rusko, Janelle Monae tour Australia

I know a few of my DJ friends like to hate on Good Vibrations for various reasons, but of the major festivals they have always had a good line up of acts for folks that enjoy their hip hop and soul roots in general.

Over the years, I have some nice memories of seeing a range of artists like Talib Kweli and Jean Grae, Estelle (before American Boy), Lee Scratch Perry & The Mad Professor, DJ Marky, Soul II Soul and Q-Tip. To bigger names like Kayne West, Snoop Dogg and Busta Rhymes who just murdered it last year.

However, this line up is possibly the best ever. I for one am really looking forward to this. Hopefully we can hook up some interviews.

Line Up:
Faithless
Phoenix
Sasha
Nas & Damian Marley
Cee Lo Green
Kelis
Ludacris
Erykah Badu
