Sample Snitching: Jay Electronica – Exhibit C

billy stewart jay electronica sample
The ‘Fat Man’ Billy Stewart! Popular in the ’60s, he was a talented singer, songwriter and piano man discovered by Bo Diddley and signed to Chess Records.

From Washington DC, he started out in a group called The Rainbows (they don’t make band names like that anymore) which included Don Covay amongst it’s members, so you know he had been around the block before hitting the big time with songs like ‘Sitting in the Park’, ‘I Do Love You’ and ‘Summertime’.

In 1970 at the age of 33, he was killed in a car crash with three members of his band, but his music lives on and not just as material for hip hop producers hungry for new samples. For instance, ‘Sitting in my Car’ as been covered by a wide range of artists – 50 of them reggae singers and one of them a rapper (Slick Rick).

Here is ‘Cross My Heart’, released on Chess in 1967, and jacked by Just Blaze to produce Jay Electronica’s ‘Exhibit C’.

Sample Snitching: I’d Rather Be Bootsy Collins

One of the greatest bass guitarists of all time. Possibly THE greatest. He worked with James Brown, Parliament and Funkadelic, and according to my flatmate he invented bass rhythms that would later become the basis of 90s hip hop. Ol’ Gregg gives us the back story about how he got the funk, and here are a couple of rappers that tried to sample some of that sweet milky funk juice.

Nate Dogg Tribute: All Dogs Go To Heaven

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Rappers. They love a verse, but so many of them get a little confused when that chorus bit comes along. When a few cuts aren’t going to do and you need a hit hook for your little rap song, then you would crack open the piggy bank, ask your mum for an advance on your pocket money, search through your couch for an extra G and give Nate Dogg a call.

We pay tribute to the G-Funk Crooner with a set of Nate Dogg Hits and the original samples – Mixed together by DJ Naiki.

We are also joined in the studio by Tuka, Nick Knowledge and Nick Lupi of Spit Syndicate for a freestyle rap session.

Sample Snitching: Sweet Sable – Old Time’s Sake

These photos were too funny not to blog. A while ago an old friend of mine, Astrid posted these shots on her facebook. Yes that is me in the orange Lowes jumper performing at Eastgarden’s shopping centre. With lyrics like “It ain’t easy being on social security. So they consider me, a burden to society”, I was an instant hit amongst local shoppers that flocked with groceries in hand.

Adidas and Nike jumpers, awful undercuts with long fringes, high waisted jeans, but I think what makes these photo collages so perfect is Astrid’s Catholic School Girl meets Graffiti style of writing. Awesome to the power of infinity plus one.

Competition: What were you wearing in the 90s?

Send your photos to stolenrecords@fbiradio.com and I will repay you with a signed and framed photo of Janet Jackson or Aaron Hall much like this one from MC Hammer and take you out to dinner or something.

Sample Snitching: Teena Marie a.k.a. Lady T Tribute

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1crrw_teena-marie-lovergirl_music
Possibly one of the first white rappers, and definitely the only white soul artist of the 80’s that had consistent, credible hits on the R&B charts, Teena Marie died on Sunday at the age of 54. To pay our tribute, we thought we would post some Teena Marie classics and some of the hip hop songs she inspired. Oh and check out her rap verse on Square Biz. Fyyyyaaahhhh!

Dionne Warwick – You’re Gonna Need Me

Dionne WarwickIf I was stuck on a desert island with just one song, Dionne Warwick’s “You’re Gonna Need Me” just might be that record I pick. Have been binging on this song again this weekend. Released in 1973, you can get it on her album Just Being Me.

Toto La Momposina and Timbaland’s Colombian Flute

Toto La Momposina

It’s like when Mickey Rooney puts on the buckteeth and angry eyebrows for Breakfast at Tiffany’s or when they dress up a bunch of Pueto Rican’s in feathers for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in New York, Timbaland thinks that he can enlist Bhangra vocalist Raje Shwari and we wouldn’t notice that the flute that he is singing about is not actually Indian, but in fact Colombian. Racist.

Sample Snitching: The Icemen – My Girl (She’s A Fox)

Young Jimi Hendrix

Oh this is not The Icemen. It's a young Jimi with Wilson Pickett from 1966

This little 7″ single and possibly the group that made this track, may have been totally forgotten if not for the fact they employed a young James Marshall (a.k.a. Jimi Hendrix) to play guitar on this song. Between touring with Curtis Knight and the Squires, James was doing a bit of session work for King Curtis. Out of these sessions came songs for King Curtis himself, Lonnie Youngblood, Jimmy Normans and this one for The Icemen – a soul duo made up of James Stokes and Gino Armstrong.

This track was sampled on both Amy Winehouse and John Legend records in 2007. Coincidence? Maybe they picked up the same Jimi Hendrix – The Early Years compilation.

Sample Snitching: Xzibit and Gabriel Faure

Gabriel Faure

When I’m not listening to songs about sex, money and violence, I like to fill the room with one of my favourite French romantic composers, Gabriel Faure.  Pavane in F-Sharp Minor is a piece he composed in 1887, and was sampled more than 100 years later by Xzibit. At the time when he wrote it, he was unhappily married and earning very little for his compositions, which were selling for about 50 Francs to the publisher. He was a bit of a depressive, pedantic sort of a chap. In his time off from his day job working as a church organist, he would write these large scale works and a couple piano pieces, but unhappy with how they were received he would destroy them just after a few performances. Here is the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra playing one that thankfully survived.
