Photos: Hip Hop Halloween at Goodgod

Photos by Robin Hearfield

For one night only we resurrected three hip hop greats. Using the bodies of Sydney DJ’s Bad Ezzy, Shantan Wantan Ichiban and Levins as hosts, we opened up a portal to the spirit world and brought back – Left Eye, Eazy E and MCA (mad scientist version from the Intergalactic video – too soon) for EXCLUSIVE DJ sets.

Too many shots. Not enough food in stomach. Dark sunglasses in a dark club. All factors which contributed to one of the most ram shackled mixes I have ever done. Fortunately I think everyone else was too drunk to notice at our very loose Hip Hop Halloween Party.

If your memory is as hazy as mine, maybe these pictures will help you piece together this very spooky, very trashy night.

It was a little controversial and not well received by all. I heard quite a few complaints from women saying – “How can a man win a Dancehall Queen contest?”. However, the majority of the mob decided and Jose took home the much sort after Rum filled Watermelon and was crowned Dancehall Man Queen in our Dutty Dancing Contest.

All together this was an amazing night. The dancefloor stayed packed with bodies grinding the night away to the best of new and classic dancehall reggae hits. Shantan Wantan Ichiban, Basslines and Nick Toth throwing everything they had at the crowd.

Make sure you are back in late November for more tropical riddims and gringos talking patois. Booyakashaaaa!

If you missed out here is a little taste of the musical vibes…

Nothing groundbreaking, just a really fun party. Every second month the hippest covers night is held at Goodgod Small Club: the Player Hater’s Ball. This time round with the assistance of Alphamama, we payed tribute to Destiny’s Child, and craziness ensued. Never have we seen Goodgod that packed. The line for this party went out the club and down the street. People were willing to wait up to an hour, just to get into this party, and it was well worth it. Levins, Joyride and Alphamama really killing it all night.

Photos: Mayer Hawthorne at the Metro in Sydney

Photos by Caroline Garcia

Originally known as DJ Haircut, Mayer Hawthorne was a little side project that he was working on in his spare time. He never took himself as a serious singer, until one day he showed it to Peanut Butter Wolf and the rest is history.

As amazing as his show was the first time I saw him. I did think Mayer Hawthorne was the sort of artist, whose strength was more in the studio than as a super awesome live singer. How things have changed.

Mayer Hawthorne’s voice has really developed, as has his live show. So good.

From Stockholm to Compton, this was a night showcasing some very unique styles of reggae music from two different parts of the globe. Hailing from Compton Los Angeles, of Hawaiian and Samoan heritage, J Boog brings the island vibes with a very laid back Polynesian soul influenced style of roots reggae. In support of J Boog was Million Stylez. Million was born and raised in Stolkholm, Sweden, and is half Japanese and French. Growing up among mostly migrants he learned to respect different cultures and started experimenting with hip hop at a young age. A little later he discovered reggae music and is now one of the number one dancehall artists in Europe. Together they put on an amazing show, highlighting different sides of reggae music.

I will be honest. We are going to have to get our own soundsystem next time we do this. Great turn out, capacity event, hot people, lots of hip shaking and drunken unruliness, but some problems with sound. With a few more people in the room it was hard to get it loud it enough with out the speakers cutting out.

Even so, it was still an amazing night of Rock N Roll and Soul from the 50s and 60s, and we are going to work hard to make sure the next one is even more swinging.

I said to her I would just take a few, but found it hard to leave any out. You may know her as a triple j newsreader, she also takes some pretty sweet photos. These are shots from her time in New York earlier this year. See the rest of the gallery and more awesomeness on her site.

Photos: Musica / Tumbalong, Sydney 2011

Photos by: Andy ‘Moses’ Vermeulen of Hobo

In it’s first year, Musica is a smaller scale festival at Darling Harbour’s Tumbalong Park with a really cool line up. Maybe a little to cool to draw a massive festival crowd, it was a refreshingly, easy going, dickhead free day of good music. Rather than fighting crowds of sweaty muscle bound boofheads, dividing your time between 7 stages of the same old acts, Musica was just one stage of smaller amazing new artists. Perfect sunny weather for enjoying the likes of SBTRKT, Lunice, Ghostpoet, Baths, Electic Wire Hustle, Mitzi, Bon Chat Bon Rat, Tiger & Woods and Simon Caldwell. Brilliant day. Let’s hope it becomes a regular fixture in the festival calendar.
