DJ Naiki ‘Beastie Boys Tribute’ in honour of MCA

beastie boys run dmc in alley under fire escape brick wall
Way back when all Australian’s knew how to do at concerts was mosh and crowd surf inappropriately to everything, I remember seeing Beastie Boys at Sydney’s Hordern Pavillion, just after Hello Nasty was released. It was an amazing show as the group played as a band performing their really diverse catalogue. Amazing.

They are a group that has reinvented themselves again and again over time. Never staying still. They way were the group that helped to expose hip hop to white kids, but through the years also introduced hip hop kids to punk, bossanova, funk, country and much more.

Rest in Peace, Adam Yauch a.k.a. MCA. This our tribute to the Beastie Boys put together by DJ Naiki

Podcast: A Tribute to DJ Mehdi

DJ Mehdi at Parklife Brisbane

Photo by Damien Radford at Brisbane Parklife 2010

I was at Parklife last year in Brisbane for work and as the other Lacoste wearing brown person in Queensland I kept getting mistaken for Mehdi at various pre-festival parties. As ridiculous as it was I was thinking if I could pull off a French accent, I could really clean up here. Later I did a brief interview with Mehdi, and ended up bumping into him a couple of times over following week or so. Though my encounters were brief, he really did come across as that good natured, good humoured person that you hear about from so many of the people that knew him well.

Last week when I heard the tragic news, I started going through the Mehdi stuff I had and collecting a few other bits. I ended up putting together this mix for the show, playing some of his older hip hop production, newer hip hoppy stuff, remixes and some of the original tracks he sampled. I am sure there are some better tributes other there like this one from Feadz and this hip hop mix by Abcdr du Son, but even so this is our hommage.

Vodpod videos no longer available.
