Photos: Player Hater’s Ball: Destiny’s Child Edition

Photos by Robin Hearfield

Nothing groundbreaking, just a really fun party. Every second month the hippest covers night is held at Goodgod Small Club: the Player Hater’s Ball. This time round with the assistance of Alphamama, we payed tribute to Destiny’s Child, and craziness ensued. Never have we seen Goodgod that packed. The line for this party went out the club and down the street. People were willing to wait up to an hour, just to get into this party, and it was well worth it. Levins, Joyride and Alphamama really killing it all night.

I kinda missed this as I was holding down the fort, Djing in the front of Goodgod Small Club, as the rest of the gang staged a take over of the Sydney Opera House for Vivid Festival. Though I heard many reports of all sorts of craziness as everybody flooded back to the club afterwards to party till 6am. Here is a little bit of photographic evidence of what went down when Nicky Da B, Egyptian Lover and Prince Zimboo brought the party to the Nun’s Scrum.

Heaps Decent Showcase at Fraser Studios

Photos by Robin Hearfield

Better than what you thought, huh? These kids can really rap and sing and write songs. On Sunday folks gathered at Fraser Studios to watch young people as youthful as 14 perform songs that they have written with the aid of Heaps Decent facilitators at their Homebase workshops at Redfern Community Centre. Full of personality and so much talent, each performer contributed to a fantastic energy in the room. A delightful end to the week.

Massive. From when the doors open at 11pm the venue was packed out with punters keen for some dutty dancehall reggae. With a DJ line up including Dynamite Sound, Basslines, Nick Toth, Ability, Levins and Shantan Wantan Ichiban, it was the first time I had seen a lot of there thing for a while, and everybody absolutely murked it.

Highlight of the night would have to be the running man competition. Grown folks in the middle of the circle dancing their hearts to the sounds of MC Hammer like they were 14 again.

It was definitely a night full of 90s nostalgia. Many punters coming dressed to the theme having rummaged through the back of their closets to find an outfit they may have worn more than 10 years ago. Meanwhile, the DJs pumped out rnb classic after classic to a packed Danceteria at Goodgod Small Club.

Thanks to all that came and made it a massive night. Congratulations to Callum our Running Man Champion of NSW and Lilybeth the winner of our Westcoast Cooler and Passion Pop hamper for best dressed.

Mike Who’s Bolivian Death Bed

I was lucky enough to take a trip to Bolivia over the last 2 weeks, and have now only just started to shake the remnants of a pretty ferkin horrible journey home. Bolivia is an amazingly beautiful country and everyone i met bar too many tourists with hiking boots and bad dreadlocks were awsome people.  I managed to check a few cities and have included a bunch of photos taken mostly by my lady who lucky for you takes way better photos than me. To top off this post of greatness i included some tunes that got me through fever induced bus rides, hotel room hallucinations, market lurks, hospital visits, twilight zone salt flats, border crossings and llama meat platters. If you buy me a drank once I’m home I will tell you some extended tales. Enjoy, Mike Who.

Mike Who En Iquique Chile

This is basically a bunch of awsome photos of Iquique from my Bro over here. To check more of his photos follow here MrTontoJack. . Iquique Is a city in the North of Chile and pretty much my second home. I won’t ramble too much and instead let you check the photos for a slice of this beautiful city nestled in between one of the driest deserts on the planet and the Pacific Ocean.

As you can see from the last two photos there was a fire down the block the other day it was pretty heavy, but luckily nobody was harmed bar a little damage to the local Panaderia.

To add some icing suger to your Churros here are some Summertime jams that have been  been getting me through the recent heatwave. Saludos, Mike Who.

Photos: Mayer Hawthorne at the Metro in Sydney

Photos by Caroline Garcia

Originally known as DJ Haircut, Mayer Hawthorne was a little side project that he was working on in his spare time. He never took himself as a serious singer, until one day he showed it to Peanut Butter Wolf and the rest is history.

As amazing as his show was the first time I saw him. I did think Mayer Hawthorne was the sort of artist, whose strength was more in the studio than as a super awesome live singer. How things have changed.

Mayer Hawthorne’s voice has really developed, as has his live show. So good.

Gappy Ranks at Goodgood Small Club | Fri Feb 17

Photos by Caroline Garcia

Gappy Ranks is one of the artists at the forefront of a resurgence in UK reggae music. Not since the 80s and artists like Smiley Culture, have there been English reggae artists that have been able to record hits in the UK, which also received respect and success back in Jamaica. Gappy Ranks however has been changing that.

Not long after his first visit to Australia in September last year, Gappy returned to our shores to merk it once more. Here are some shots from his performance at Goodgod with supports from Hoops, Jimmy Sing & Judgement, Naiki and the African Essence Dancers.

Also I have uploaded one of the tracks he performed. A reggae song about his experience being in Japan when the earthquake hit last year.
