I am not really sure, but there could still be a warrant out for my arrest in New York State. Maybe it is my paranoia, but I was pretty sure on my way back into Los Angeles from Colombia that I would get stopped by customs and thrown in jail.
It was all the result of a night out in the Lower East Side, Manhattan. As one that easily succumbs to peer pressure, I was convinced by my homie to buy something from the bodega. So naturally I picked a beverage with the most amusing name and the highest alcoholic content. Four Loko enter stage left.
Little did I know that Four Loko was crack in a can. It is a toxic cocktail of alcohol, caffeine, taurine and guarana. The drink has been made illegal in many states including New York, after it has almost killed college students on several occasions. However, there are some Bodegas that still sell it. It is also dirt cheap, though drinking dirt would probably be more enjoyable.
Usually a master of drinking inconspicuously in public, I was busted within seconds of taking my first sip. The police officers insisted that I finish my drink, but gave me a $25 fine for my trouble. Four Loko really tastes like candy flavoured vomit, so during the time it took me to finish it off, I was stopped by two other police patrols. The night after that point was a blur of hyperactive, over confident drunkness, which very nearly got me in more serious trouble.
Anyways, a couple of weeks later I was in Mexico, and hadn’t got around to paying that fine just yet. I get a call from a recorded message, telling me I needed to be in court in Brooklyn the following week or there will be a warrant out for my arrest. Great.
After several unhelpful phone conversations, I am still not sure whether that fine got sorted out. I’m back in Sydney now, but think I would be safer in a country that doesn’t have extradition treaties with the United States. Life of a fugitive.
Another day much like the one before, Totoro finds himself at the bus stop with the other Nine to Fivers. They all wait patiently for the Cat Bus to take them to their respective places of employment. On today’s journey, Totoro found himself additively listening to this J Cole song over and over again.
Music from Lanie Lane, Raphael Saadiq, Frootful, Estelle and more. However, the centre piece of tonights show is our tribute to the late great Miss Amy Winehouse. She was a troubled girl, but there has always been something I have admired about her rugged charm, brash sense of humour and honesty, which comes out with such feeling in her music.
Famed producer, Salaam Remi – who worked with Amy Winehouse on Frank, Back To Black and her unfinished comeback album – had this to say about Amy’s personality when recently talking to New York’s Power 105.1 FM.
“Amy had strong opinions on everything. …. She was very opinionated about what she liked. At the end, she was a real person,” he said. “She had a huge heart. We’d be working for hours and she would have everybody in the room snickering. She always had a joke. You could hear a lot of that in her lyrics, she could be sarcastic and she was extremely witty … but more than anything else she was a real person, an individual artist.”
“To put it all in a nutshell, Amy loved to sing, to write … that ability never left her,” he said. “She was very good at channeling her emotions into lyrics, and then being able to sing them. She was in a place to go forward and make it happen. … The way that Amy and I always created was, she would write and we would toss ideas around.”
Rest In Peace Amy!

One Day Crew – Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate and Joyride – break out the banjos and other questionable instruments, and get a little Mumford and Julia Stone on us. Here is a little glimpse of the One Day hoedown.
Dam! She was an artist that I played on my show as much as I could get away with. An amazing voice, but also a brilliant song writer. She brought the retro soul movement into the mainstream with original songs that had candor and a sense humor rare in the genre. Even as a wreck on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, she came across as a very lovable, witty hopeless case. As a fan I really wish she made more music. But it is not to be. Such a waste.
And here is the original Icemen track that Mark and Amy sampled for this jam. It features a young James Marshall (a.k.a. Jimi Hendrix). Sadly Jimi was another brilliant artist that died at 27.
Here is a tidbit from old school UK rapper, Funky DL’s mixtape ‘Back to Rap’, where he raps on beats that sample Amy Winehouse’s ‘Back to Black’. Get the mixtape here
I love the line… “I made Jesus Walks I’m never going to hell”. Ah… sorry Kanye. I’m not a religious man, but I am pretty sure it doesn’t work like that. Make a song about Jesus and then you get a green light from the authorities in heaven to engage in whatever debauchery tickles your fancy.
