So I do some work for Heaps Decent. Can’t really call it work though. It is too much fun to fall into that category. Basically it is a project putting on music workshops with young people in schools, juvenile detention centres, isolated rural communities and other places with some really talented local and international producers.
Each week at Redfern Community Centre, Heaps Decent runs a drop in program called Homebase. Tasha Lee Marshall, Fowl Murk and Medz are some of the youngsters that attend these sessions. Above you can see them perform their song Kick It produced by Heaps Decent facilitator Joyride, and below is a track by 14 year old Lil Ryonez and Monica Winter.
This is a little taste of what you will witness if you come to the Heaps Decent showcase on tomorrow… details right hurrrr
Have you ever wondered what River Dance meets Dancehall Reggae sounds like? How about Gaelic Hip Hop? It’s St Paddy’s Day and I thought we would celebrate our Irish heritage with music.
We also get our gangsta boogie on with a massive set of West Coast hip hop. Plus Joyride comes in to perform a Kelis with the Neptunes Cover, ahead of the Player Haters Ball.
I really had to stop myself from singing along to this. Ahead of the Player Haters Ball on this Saturday at Good God, Joyride gives us a little taste of what you can expect from his set. With just an acoustic guitar and his voice, he gives us a superb rendition of Frank Ocean’s ‘Novacane’. It is a rather raw recording from the show, I just added a bit compression in garage band. Hopefully the quality is okay.
I really need to get a copy of the first freestyles Just and Lupi did on the radio back when we did a late night show. They were two really hungry, talented high school kids that we got in to spit, while their parents wait to pick them up afterwards. Though that first tape, ‘The Future Is Bright’ is still hella dope, they have come a long way. Here is their latest, still rapping about graff, food and broads. Big love.
One Day Crew – Horrorshow, Spit Syndicate and Joyride – break out the banjos and other questionable instruments, and get a little Mumford and Julia Stone on us. It wasn’t exactly hood, but we still had a knee slapping good time as the One Dayers play an all acoustic gig. The night included guest spots from Illy, Jane Tyrell, Milan and more. Here is a little glimpse of the One Day hoedown.
Getting our groove on with some R&B classics. Spit Syndicate, The Tongue and Don Joyride get their freestyle on. DJ Abilities plays some riggity rap music!
