Really going to try and make Mixtape Mondays a reality now that i am on regular nightshifts over here. Every Monday i plan to post a new mix i have been feeling, or a nostalgic jem from the past. Freeloads will obviously join in for the fun. Being self indulgent i thought i would kick things off with a new mix i finished a week back for Sydney don Shan Frenzie’s radio show Groove Therapy. I hate this mix because i spent too long finishing it, but you might not. The mix runs through a bunch of different tunes old and new and a few of my own cheeky edits thrown in. Enjoy!
I need to get some nail polish remover. It has been more than a week since Love Bombs, and I still have a bright orange pinky nail from where they used nail polish in lieu of a stamp. On the rooftop at Sweeney’s Love Bombs is the only place to be on Boxing Day. It is a group of friends getting together to play hip hop, r&b, soul, boogie, and a bit of house, all afternoon long and into the night.

I will be honest. We are going to have to get our own soundsystem next time we do this. Great turn out, capacity event, hot people, lots of hip shaking and drunken unruliness, but some problems with sound. With a few more people in the room it was hard to get it loud it enough with out the speakers cutting out.
Even so, it was still an amazing night of Rock N Roll and Soul from the 50s and 60s, and we are going to work hard to make sure the next one is even more swinging.
The hipsters can have hip hop, I am taking Rock N Roll. It seems like everybody is trying to do hip hop parties in Sydney. The game is over saturated. So while I play rap for people that book me, I am trying to do something different with my nights.
This Friday we have a Rock N Roll and Soul night happening at Hollywood Hotel called Mashed Potato. Watch out Dusty Fingers and Loose Joints. We about to take over. Getting that Rockabilly money.
Shazaming tracks at Jingle Jangles is starting to pay off. Tonight we just played jams from the 50s and 60s. Oh and MK1 came in for a mix, and DJ Dam was on general mixing duties.

I didn’t think they made dirty songs like these in the 1950s. I thought married couples slept in seperate beds and you would get stoned in the town square talking like this.
I am there trying to work out if the ‘Drill Daddy Drill’ song is just innocent, until I hear the line “set up your drill in the middle of my field” and “If the well runs dry we will use another hole”. It reminds me so much of Lil Wayne’s “Miss Officer” and R. Kelly “The Zoo”. Take a bad metaphor and just keep those shamelessly terrible puns coming.

Hollywood Hotel was actually a perfect venue for this. Though it has a rather awkward dance floor, the place was filled with folks dancing around the small pub in Surry Hills.
Owned by former TV and Movie star of the 1950s, Doris Goddard, Hollywood Hotel seemed an appropriate setting for our Rock N Roll and Soul night. At the last one, Ms Goddard sat at the end of the bar for the early part of the night. Her only complaint, that we were a little loud. High praises from a woman who has been known to pull the power on DJs she disapproves of.
So we are doing another one of these before Sonny and Emma leave to Europe. Expect good music, lots of dancing, attractive hipster girls in rockabilly attire, and I promise Sonny won’t be doing any inappropriate scratching.

I never get booked to play this old rock n roll and soul. I have a heap of it, but the only way you get to play it out is putting on your own parties. So I am doing just that. Teaming up with Dear Pluto and Sonny Syah, this is bound to have you shaking a tail feather into the wee hours of the morning. You know it is going to be a party.
This jam ain’t for everybody. Only the sexy people. All you fly brothers and sisters, break out your ties and formal dresses for the Player Haters Ball. Playing everything from Marvin Gaye to Jigga will be DJs Levins, Joyride and Shantan Wantan Ichiban.
Also the Samoan John Legend, Don Juan Joyride with his band the Accidents will be performing two live sets on the night. First set starting at 12 midnight will be a mix of originals and some covers of new and classic soul. Then later a second set of covers of your favourite R. Kelly jams. Yes you heard right an R. KELLY TRIBUTE SET. Ignition, Real Talk, Vibe, Bump N Grind, I’m A Flirt maybe something from Trapped In The Closet… and so much more. Celebrate with us the insane comedy genius that is Kelz.

I was at Parklife last year in Brisbane for work and as the other Lacoste wearing brown person in Queensland I kept getting mistaken for Mehdi at various pre-festival parties. As ridiculous as it was I was thinking if I could pull off a French accent, I could really clean up here. Later I did a brief interview with Mehdi, and ended up bumping into him a couple of times over following week or so. Though my encounters were brief, he really did come across as that good natured, good humoured person that you hear about from so many of the people that knew him well.
Last week when I heard the tragic news, I started going through the Mehdi stuff I had and collecting a few other bits. I ended up putting together this mix for the show, playing some of his older hip hop production, newer hip hoppy stuff, remixes and some of the original tracks he sampled. I am sure there are some better tributes other there like this one from Feadz and this hip hop mix by Abcdr du Son, but even so this is our hommage.
