Tours, Tattoos and Cheese Cake. We talked to Pharoahe Monch and Jean Grae a little while ago. Such agreeable company. Both of them have albums to sell. Pharoahe’s is out now, and Jean’s should not be far off. Be a darling and pick up a copy of W.A.R. (We Are Renegades) and Cake or Death.

One of the greatest bass guitarists of all time. Possibly THE greatest. He worked with James Brown, Parliament and Funkadelic, and according to my flatmate he invented bass rhythms that would later become the basis of 90s hip hop. Ol’ Gregg gives us the back story about how he got the funk, and here are a couple of rappers that tried to sample some of that sweet milky funk juice.
Rappers. They love a verse, but so many of them get a little confused when that chorus bit comes along. When a few cuts aren’t going to do and you need a hit hook for your little rap song, then you would crack open the piggy bank, ask your mum for an advance on your pocket money, search through your couch for an extra G and give Nate Dogg a call.
We pay tribute to the G-Funk Crooner with a set of Nate Dogg Hits and the original samples – Mixed together by DJ Naiki.
We are also joined in the studio by Tuka, Nick Knowledge and Nick Lupi of Spit Syndicate for a freestyle rap session.

These photos were too funny not to blog. A while ago an old friend of mine, Astrid posted these shots on her facebook. Yes that is me in the orange Lowes jumper performing at Eastgarden’s shopping centre. With lyrics like “It ain’t easy being on social security. So they consider me, a burden to society”, I was an instant hit amongst local shoppers that flocked with groceries in hand.
Adidas and Nike jumpers, awful undercuts with long fringes, high waisted jeans, but I think what makes these photo collages so perfect is Astrid’s Catholic School Girl meets Graffiti style of writing. Awesome to the power of infinity plus one.
Competition: What were you wearing in the 90s?
Send your photos to stolenrecords@fbiradio.com and I will repay you with a signed and framed photo of Janet Jackson or Aaron Hall much like this one from MC Hammer and take you out to dinner or something.
Normally I don’t like rappers that use big words and know what they mean. I’ll take swag over substance any day. Even so, I am really quite partial to Sole’s version of Mac Miller’s ‘Donald Trump’. It had to be said. As much as Mac Miller is semi-okay, and the song is catchy as fuck… Donald Trump?!? Seriously, fuck that dude!

Woo! Jaded rap songs that try to say something, I didn’t think they still made those. For more on why Donald Trump is a shithead, read his Dickipedia article.
Have you ever wondered what River Dance meets Dancehall Reggae sounds like? How about Gaelic Hip Hop? It’s St Paddy’s Day and I thought we would celebrate our Irish heritage with a couple of tunes and some truly awful jokes…
Q: Why does an Irish Man wear three condoms?
A: To be sure, to be sure, to be sure!
Q: Why can’t you borrow money from a leprechaun?
A: Because they’re always a little short.
Q: How can you tell if an Irishman is having a good time?
A: He’s Dublin over with laughter!
Stories of being chased by police from state to state with N.W.A. like they were the Blues Brothers, roller skating with Dr Dre and intergalactic conversations with Will.I.Am. We were fortunate enough to be granted an audience with His Highness, Arabian Prince and these are just some of the subjects we touched on. Possibly one of the best interviews we have done, though I did accidentally call him ‘African Prince’. Yeeeessshh… Sorry!
We also play some music. 80s Electro Hip Hop, Indie Backpacker Rap, and we pull together a little tribute for Nate Dogg. Next week we will do it in more depth.

Brrr! Brrr! Brrr! Put your hands up. Feel those horns. It is the Young Money remix of Kanye’s ‘All Of The Lights’ with Weezy, Drake and Big Sean. The original is so massive, but some how this remix is not nearly as killer as it should be. Please insert Nicki Minaj. Thoughts?
Foreign yet familiar. I love a non-English version of a Western hit. Here is Japan’s answer to the Jackson 5, The Clash via Algeria and Chaka Demus & Pliers gone Bollywood. Get ethnic with it.
Sleep standing outside Shinjuku Station. Proof the Japanese can nap anywhere.
Brisky Lazer Guns. One of the all girl groups I saw at a night called Girls Power.
There is not an object that can't be converted into a cute animal. Council workers any where else would find this equipment too emasculating. Imagine trying to wolf whistle at a girl, while leaning on one of these.
Much like how African Americans have reclaimed the 'N-Word'.
Oink!
キノコホテル (Kinoco Hotel). An all girl Japanese Garage Rock band.
Woah! Really putting it out there dude. I hope you can back it up.
Japan. Crazy, huh? I hear they sell orphan babies in vending machines and Hello Kitty is President. I went there once. These are some of the photos I took on my brother’s shitty camera before it’s battery ran out and I couldn’t recharge it. Some of them are even semi in focus.
I was at an all girls rock night in Shinjuku and was having one of those “I’m spending way much money” moments. In hindsight I should have bought one of the CD’s these Kinoco Hotel girls were peddling, but in lieu of having some of their music to share, I have posted something of a similar vain.
The 5.6.7.8’s, are probably the best known of the Japanese all girl Garage Rock bands. Their music is reminiscent of American Surf Rock, Rockabilly and Garage Rock, they also cameo in Kill Bill and they can’t sing L’s. I Ruv You!
