Photos: Good God Birthday Bashment with Gappy Ranks, Kween G & Bad Ezzy, Toni Toni Lee and More

Photos by Robin Hearfield

In the part of town you come for shitty tourist pubs and Korean karaoke, hidden away in the Spanish Quarter of Sydney is Good God Small Club. A venue I frequent regularly, and find myself getting into various types of trouble a little too often. Once La Campana an old Spanish Salsatech/Restaurant, it was taken over by Jimmy Sing and Hana Shimada one year ago. To celebrate they threw three big parties over the long weekend. These are photos from their Bashment Jam with a massive line up including the UK’s biggest dancehall artist Gappy Ranks alongside Hoops, Guerre, Toni Toni Lee, Kween G & Bad Ezzy, Levins, Kato, Huggz, Max Gosford, Firehouse and more. Gappy Ranks totally merked it, despite the fact his DJ didn’t know how to use CDJs or Serato. Fortunately, Mike was there to save the day.

Can you tell that Julia is also an architect? Her photos have a wonderful way of highlighting the patterns in man made structures. Earlier this year, when she was traveling Asia, she took a bunch of pictures, which she will be exhibiting at Darlie Laundromatic. It launches Wednesday, September 28 at 6pm with nibbles. If you are part of our Sydney audience, I recommend heading along, not only for the photos, but for Darlie Laundromatic’s mini hotdogs, cheap drinks and the rock ‘n’ roll laundromat thing it has going.

FBi’s Winter Prom at the FBi Social

Photos by Emma Daniels of Dear Pluto

I meant to put these up a while ago. These are drunken photos by Emma mostly of Sonny, Anya and I striking a few poses at FBi’s Winter Prom in July. It was a cracking good party, taking it’s inspiration from all those American TV proms rather than your own daggy formals. Though I was actually king at my formal, it was a chance to do it all again and correct everything that was awkward and horrible at your high school formal. It was amazingly decorated, everybody looked so good and indie cover band – Fan Fixion – weren’t terrible either. In my dreams, this is everything I imagined the Stolen Records Gala Ball to be.

Photos: FBi 94.5’s Changing Lanes Festival 2011

Photos by the amazing Elize Strydom

Maybe it will all change next year, when Steve Aoki is confirmed to play the festival. But as it stands, Changing Lanes has one of the lowest Southern Cross tattoo counts of all the festivals on the Sydney music calendar. While there was a noticeable absence of shirtless bogans and 18 year old girls group dressing as sexy nurses, it did register a 9.3 on the Hipster Scale. It was definitely a much more ironic facial hair, vintage clothing affair.

In it’s second year, at a new location in Surry Hills, the festival is an easier, inexpensive, low key experience. The acts may not be as uber famous, but the crowds are a little less intense. It is more a day for enjoying drinks and sunshine with friends while casually taking in some live music.

Though I didn’t get to see heaps of the festival, because I was playing most of the day, my highlight was Joyride spinning in the hip hop room with impromptu appearances from rappers 360 and The Tongue. Joyride provided instrumentals by Mariah Carey and Ginuine, while they traded semi-battley freestyles.

We had a good ol’ time talking about our favourite flower arrangements. I’m quite fond of native arrangements myself. You can’t go wrong with Paper Daisies. They just last forever. You can hear our conversation and Miss Lane’s live performance in this episode of our show…

Photos: Big Boi at the Enmore Theatre Sydney

Photos by: Andy ‘Moses’ Vermeulen of the infamous Hobo Gestapo

I had a bit of a love hate relationship with the band. Bombs Over Baghdad for instances – not necessary. I just want to hear that kicking, crisp electronic production rather than a wall of noise through which it was sometimes difficult to make out the song. However, on the other hand, Spottieottiedopalicious played with the help of two horn players in matching green Adidas tracksuits – stooooopid fresh to the power of infinity plus one.

Oh did anybody see that hoochie doing her stripper dance between the horn players? Oh dear! Maybe it would work in a place where folks weren’t so rhythmically challenged, but it just seems awkward when they invite the girls on stage in an attempt to turn the encore into the after party.

Nitpicking aside, Big Boi has hits for days, and delivers them with an amazing energy and flow. He played his part of all the Outkast hits as early as ‘Southernplayalisticcadiallacmusic’ taking us through to his more recent ‘Sir Luscious Left Foot’ solo jams. What more can I say? Dude can really rap, and it is just bumping party music.

In addition, Theophilus London was fun. Bringing a little bit of that Andre 3000 element to the tour.

Oh and big ups to Thundamentals who almost got kicked off the tour for stealing chicken backstage. Apparently Big Boi has two tonnes of chicken wings in his rider in every variety from Buffalo Wings to Honey Mustard Wings.

Anyways, here is a mix we did…

Photos: Daniel Merriweather at Tone in Sydney

Scary Canary on a Wednesday night. It is like a Koh Phangan full moon party in the middle of Sydney’s CBD minus the sand, water and some dude with dredlocks fire twirling. Trashy tourists, trashy music all getting trashy on toxic cocktails served in little buckets with big straws.

Don’t ask how we ended up here at 3 in the morning after Mr Merriweather’s show. But I guess this is how I paid Daniel back for showing me some of the slightly more classy parties that you can find in New York on a weeknight while I was in his town.

From Melbourne originally now living in Harlem for several years, Daniel put on a couple of shows while returning to Australia for a little while. Instead of an over rehearsed show that an artist reproduces in every city, Daniel’s performance at Tone felt more like he was playing to us in the living room of a New York apartment in the wee hours of the morning after the clubs had closed.

Working his way through a bottle of Jameson, Daniel played his songs acoustically, and talked to us openly and honestly in between each track. He spoke about the vices that have inspired some of his songs, joked about making very little progress on the new album, his opinions on the London riots, Amy Winehouse and other friends and fellow artists that have passed away.

While I think some were expecting something more uptempo, instead we experienced a very intimate, at times very somber show, which really showcased his amazing voice as he sung with such feeling and depth.

Photos: Wu-Tang Clan live at the Enmore Theatre

It is funny when the hip hop show descends into a not so private party on stage, which u had the misfortune of witnessing. A bunch of girls dancing badly with old men. Hurry up and end it please, so that we can all go home.

All and all though, it was a good show. On a Thursday evening at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney, the Wu-Tang formed together like Voltron, they just happened to be missing an arm and a leg. Though even with Rza, Meth and ODB absent, the Wu is still a force to be reckoned with. Ghostface alone has the force of 100 emcees when he explodes on the microphone. Plus it’s hard to go wrong with classic tracks for days.

Young Dirty Bastard though? I am just not sure. I understand he is carrying on the legacy, but it just seems a little funny making a career impersonating your father.
