I’mma keep this brief cuz my brain be all like:    d[o.O]b    after hearing Kendrick’s verse on ‘Control’.  Ok, sure we’re all thinking it, but dang Kenny, why did have to murder everyone on that track? WHY?! Oh and some advice Jay Electronica, maybe, just maybe you should have had a peep at Kendrick’s lyrics before you followed up with that weak-ass verse. Ya, just because I was brrapping and “oh my gawding” after Kendrick’s verse, doesn’t mean I didn’t pay attention to the soft follow up. Someone please just take me back to 1986 where the only ‘Control’ I was interested was by Janet Jackson and yes, it was nasty.

Hai, oh yeah, we played a whole bunch of other stuff in that 113 mins that Control (not the Janet version) was not on air. Sir Shant-a-Lot started off with an old-sounding-new school reggae set, then that Control track happened and I blanked out…

I’m just playing! Senor Bolivar kicked off some tropical beats that had us dancing and we ended off the show with Havknot Massive who dropped a Havknot exclusive.

Dancehall Reggae’s New Viral Video Vixens

duttydontstop33

Dutty Dancing is back this Saturday, and yes, we are doing the dutty dance off one more time.

The stakes are high with a piece of dancehall reggae history up for grabs as we are give away one of Shabba Rank’s iconic gold ropes* in our competition. In 1994, when in Kingston, Jamaica, Nick Toth won this piece of jewelry from Shabba after settling a dispute in a deadly thumb wrestling match. It could be yours, if your booty reigns supreme in our dance off. To give you a little inspiration for your routine, we have compiled a couple more videos to keep you from doing something a little more productive.

There has been a long standing relationship between hip hop and dancehall reggae. Hip Hop started with DJ Kool Herc, who took the trend of DJs chanting over records in Jamaica and brought it to New York.

Over the last year or so, this influence has been more prominent as American artist have been using Caribbean music as the inspiration for the biggest club bangers. Kanye’s Mercy samples Super Beagle, and almost everything on the Yeezus album has a classic vocal from Capelton, Sizzla or Beenie Man. French Montana’s Freaks, A$AP Ferg’s Shabba Ranks, and of course Busta Rhymes and Nicki Minaj return to their Caribbean roots to create Twerk It – check out the cameo from DJ Khaled, who’s recent proposal to Nicki was returned with a restraining order.

BUSTA RHYMES TWERK IT (REMIX) FT. NICKI MINAJ

As much as I love Busta’s caricature of dancehall culture – there is a lot more to dancehall dance than simple twerking like Miley Cyrus. In our last article for Goodgod, I put you up on the age old dancehall standards that have been inspiration for most of the dancing you see in hip hop video clips. This time around I am going to introduce you to a couple of more recent trends.

MR VEGAS – BRUK IT DOWN
Like the explosion of Youtube covers, and ‘sweded’ movie trailers, reggae has it’s own viral video trend as young women with wastes of rubber and booties like yo-yos record their own versions of the biggest dances – some of which are generating more hits than the official film clip.

From New York, Miss Likkle Bit’s astounding interpretation of Mr Vega’s latest hit is almost at 2 million views. Looking like it was recorded on a laptop camera in her basement, the crazy skills she displays in this video led to Miss Likkle Bits touring with the likes of Major Lazer.

RDX – KOTCH
Like a lot of the Sweded Trailers you see, the production value for the viral videos are ever improving. Here Jamaica’s, Russian Roulette dancers saved RDX a little money as their version of KOTCH removed the need for RDX to shoot an official video for one of the biggest dances of the year.

Over to the UK, here the Unique Silver dancers takeover the playground as on lookers with their children are made to feel a little uncomfortable.

FUSE ODG – ANTENNA
Rewwiinnddddd! I posted this in my last article, but it deserves a reload. The music of Nigeria and Ghana have been increasingly getting played at bashment parties in the UK. Way bigger than the official video, this couple do their interpretation of FUSE ODG’s crossover Azonto hit. Different to traditional dancehall, the dance moves are influences by those popular in Ghana.

MAJOR LAZER – WATCH OUT FOR THIS

One more for inspiration. Inspired by the style and dancing of the low budget early 90s videos by Shabba Ranks, Beenie Man and Chaka Demus & Pliers, Major Lazer take us back with this clip. Like the Snow of modern dancehall reggae, Diplo really dresses the part. Too funny!

See at Goodgod Danceteria this Saturday bruking it down in our competition. Get to practicing now!

*said Shabba Ranks Gold Rope may not be the genuine article. It is most likely a bad fake bought online.

Episode #4151: Dancehall Mix + Dutty Dance Off

2011-topic-music-shabba-ranks
RADIO SHOW: LISTEN TO OUR BASHMENT SPECIAL W/ LOUIS BASSLINES

This hump day Stolen Records was brought you by the Caribbean.

On the nigh of the fortmonthly Dutty Dancing party at Good God, Emperor Shantan Wantan “Jamaican Patty” Ichiban and Mike “Curry Goat with Rice and Peas” Who, murked the airwaves with an ass-shaking dancehall set. Dancehall mashed up with a bit of UK grime and a lil dash of dubstep had everyone within a 27km radius inexplicably moving their waist. Even my friend Lieve and her friend Wendy all they way in Zevenbergen (not Sevenburger), Holland were getting down and daggering at work (not really, but hey, could have happened).

My favourite bass line dropped about three-quarters into the show. Louis “Stewed Peas” Bassline dashed all requests pon de floor and played whatever chune he rassclot wanted to. And it was good.

See you Saturday!

Podcast #4521: Cakes Da Killa + The Tongue: Freestyles, Interviews, Trivia, Beef & Fun Times

Download Full Show: Cakes Da Killa & The Tongue in the Studio

Who the heck is Cakes Da Killa? I didn’t know either until this show. He’s a badass MC, poet, lyricist and madd theatre buff from New Jersey and clearly a long lost cousin of the Panini family. Blinked and I missed it but he was in Sydney a little while back. Well spoken and dope on the mic, I’m kinda gutted I didn’t see him live. Next time…

Next we had Sydney artist The Tongue aka Toungue aka Tonuge aka The Teacher. When he’s not influencing the young minds of the future, dressing in drag for video clips and starting Twitter beefs he’s writing thought-provoking tracks and doing one hell of a job performing them. Here to promote his ‘Surrender to Victory’ tour The Tongue stopped by to talk about rap music and freestyle. And since he’s such a fan of beefs, Shantan had him play our occasional Stolen Records game “Cake” but altered for this instance to “Steak”. Winning 4.5 pieces of luke-warm IGA beef steak The Tongue humoured our presenter and answered all the hip hop beef questions correctly.

Wanting even more beef, he then dissed us in his freestyle, thus starting a Stolen Records v Tongue beef*.

You should listen to the show.

(*There’s no beef, it was a weak ploy to increase readership. Sigh…)

Episode #4321: A$AP Ferg Interview + DJ Leon Smith Booty Shakin’ #twerk Mix

sakura_05
RADIO SHOW: Listen to show w/ A$AP FERG and DJ LEON SMITH

Howdy! And a happy Hump Day to you. So, Jay-Z drops an album – which nearly goes platinum instantly and tweets that his favourite Britney Spears track is ‘Toxic’ and Miley Cyrus is a Twerk GOD, what in the world is going on…? But on a breakfast tip, Jay-Z favourite cereal is Cap’n Crunch – mine too. See? Rappers are just like us!

A$AP mob member A$AP Ferg graced us with an interview. After 2-hours of waiting to record said interview, Shantan quickly realised that A$AP didn’t have the same meaning as ASAP. To me, that seemed quite obvious. I mean you never see anyone write soon like $oon. Apparently it means “Always Strive and Prosper” or maybe “All Strippers Ask for Paper”.

Someone say strippers? We had the Sultan of Smut, King of Ratchet, Baron of Booty Shake, DJ Leon Smith. DJ Leon Smith has been in the Sydney DJ scene for a hot minute and he’s a part of the Stolen Records extended family. But tonight he pulled back and only went quarter ratchet on us but still laid an expletive DJ set which was all we could ask for and more.

Ah, I had this whole plan of how my set was going to go, and then at the end of it I was going to be carried out the club like a god. But unfortunately my serato bugged out and died on me twice midset. Only after deleting a heap of Woody Allen and Disney films I had been downloading this week, did I continue problem free.

Beast of a night. Despite the rain folks came out in force, hungry for some rap music. Adit kicked it off with some tasty rnb and new hip hop gems.

I came on, fucked up the club with New Slaves midset. Gave it a pull up. Shit went off. White kids rapping that shit like they meant every word. Like it was their parents who experienced racism.

The homie Nacho Pop who saved my ass a few times when Serato committed suicide on me, came back on with heavy hitting, bass heavy club jams to really work out the Goodgod system.

And then Mike Who bringing it back with some old school hip hop gems to keep a significant the crowd hanging on till 4am.

We had fun. Hope you did to. Maybe we should do it again leading into summer. What do you think?

Episode #7993: Adit from Horrorshow, 2012 DMC Champ Clockwork, Minestrone Soup + Julia Gillard’s Knitware

Julia Guilard Knitting
RADIO SHOW: Listen to show w/ ADIT of HORRORSHOW and CLOCKWORK

After some time loafing around, me,  Janini Panini aka Baker’s Delight Special of the Week aka Celiac’s nightmare aka 2 Cups of Self-Rising Flour is baaaack!

This week’s ‘Sample Snitching’ original was the Ponderosa’s Special track, ‘Bound’. It was sampled by mad genius, North West baby daddy, Kanye “I Am  God” West on the very aptly named track ‘Bound 2’ off his Yeezus album. Keeping up with the “I Am God” theme, this week’s prize was a knitted Julia Gillard onesie with matching pom-pom laces booties plus a pot of my best minestrone soup. Janini Panini: Keeping Stolen Records listeners warm since June 2013.

Next on the deck was Adit of Sydney outfit Horrorshow. His smoothed out 30-minute set consisted of a little 112, Justin Timberlake (his good old shit!), Miguel and oh, so much more. He’ll be joining Nasi Goreng Shantan Wantan and Questionable Decisions Mike Who? this weekend at Rap Party Shimmy Shimmy Ya, details below.

With a fresh mixing finger injury on the nefarious FBi pinball machine in the Stolen Records greenroom, 2012 NSW DMC Champ turntablist Clockwork took to the decks. Holding it down and representing bedroom turntablists all around, Clockwork showed us a thing or two using only his fingers, one slightly bloodied. He was showing off and trying to shame my iPod DJ efforts to promote the upcoming DMC World Championship to which title he’s defending. Whatever. Nah, he took us old school, mixed it with some new stuff, then rolled in some classic ish. Set was dope!

See you this weekend!
