Photos: J Boog and Million Stylez at Metro, Sydney

Photos by Andy ‘Moses’ Vermeulen of Hobo

From Stockholm to Compton, this was a night showcasing some very unique styles of reggae music from two different parts of the globe. Hailing from Compton Los Angeles, of Hawaiian and Samoan heritage, J Boog brings the island vibes with a very laid back Polynesian soul influenced style of roots reggae. In support of J Boog was Million Stylez. Million was born and raised in Stolkholm, Sweden, and is half Japanese and French. Growing up among mostly migrants he learned to respect different cultures and started experimenting with hip hop at a young age. A little later he discovered reggae music and is now one of the number one dancehall artists in Europe. Together they put on an amazing show, highlighting different sides of reggae music.

It was a half n hour of power. In just 30 min Foreign Beggars, Borgore and 12th Planet exploded onto the airwaves with massive basslines and so much energy. Twitter was going crazy as the transformed the show into something you would expect to hear on London pirate radio.

Mike Who Does Valparaiso

Here are a few  photos taken mostly by my lady and a few by me from where my year ticked over into 2012. Valparaiso is a really Cool city about an hour and a half bus ride from the capital of Chile, Santiago. The majority of people in Valparaiso live a fair hike or short cab or bus fare up these amazing hills that  surround the port which is at the centre of the city.  The seafood is amazing, the vibes are good and the city has a totally unique charm to any other place i have visited in Chile. If your coming through Chile sometime this year or ever Valparaiso is definatly worth checking.

I was also pretty relieved to go to a spot that played an alternative to Reggaeton or top 40 cheese. There is a club in Valparaiso called La Sala. Three rooms, One Dancehall, one Grime, DnB and Dubstep and one Hip Hop. Beers were cheap, girlies vibing to good music and you can wear shorts.

Never have i been so happy to hear the Cosa Nostra Riddim.

I need to get some nail polish remover. It has been more than a week since Love Bombs, and I still have a bright orange pinky nail from where they used nail polish in lieu of a stamp. On the rooftop at Sweeney’s Love Bombs is the only place to be on Boxing Day. It is a group of friends getting together to play hip hop, r&b, soul, boogie, and a bit of house, all afternoon long and into the night.

I have memories of listening to Paparazzi on rotation on my walkman sharing a headphone with a mate, while we drank in the park. As a long time fan of Xzibit, it totally took me by suprise when he started working with Dre and Eminem and began to blow up on a more commercial level. Now better know for modifying cars than hip hop, Xzibit recently toured Australia hitting every two horse town on the map. Here are some photos from Sydney.

I will be honest. We are going to have to get our own soundsystem next time we do this. Great turn out, capacity event, hot people, lots of hip shaking and drunken unruliness, but some problems with sound. With a few more people in the room it was hard to get it loud it enough with out the speakers cutting out.

Even so, it was still an amazing night of Rock N Roll and Soul from the 50s and 60s, and we are going to work hard to make sure the next one is even more swinging.

I didn’t think they made dirty songs like these in the 1950s. I thought married couples slept in seperate beds and you would get stoned in the town square talking like this.

I am there trying to work out if the ‘Drill Daddy Drill’ song is just innocent, until I hear the line “set up your drill in the middle of my field” and “If the well runs dry we will use another hole”. It reminds me so much of Lil Wayne’s “Miss Officer” and R. Kelly “The Zoo”. Take a bad metaphor and just keep those shamelessly terrible puns coming.

I am going to be playing a set of more XXX 50s Rock jams at our Rock N Roll and Soul party, Mashed Potato, this Friday at Hollywood Hotel. Here are some awkward photos of people dancing by Dear Pluto’s Emma Daniels.

Giving Jenny Craig a run for their money. It was like if Zumba had a cousin on crack. We are calling it Zumbaton. It is the latest sweaty dance work out, which we tested out at Goodgod for Badonkadonk.

Except for me, who was just playing the same old cheese that I always do, it was a night where DJs got to play stuff they never do anywhere else. Mike Who was going deep on the latin, cumbia, moombahton party vibes. Levin’s was having fun not playing hip hop for once. And Kato was just going ill.

I hope you burned some calories and had a good time doing it.
